    Validation of driving behaviour as a step towards the investigation of Connected and Automated Vehicles by means of driving simulators

    Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) are likely to become an integral part of the traffic stream within the next few years. Their presence is expected to greatly modify mobility behaviours, travel demands and habits, traffic flow characteristics, traffic safety and related external impacts. Tools and methodologies are needed to evaluate the effects of CAVs on traffic streams, as well as the impact on traffic externalities. This is particularly relevant under mixed traffic conditions, where human-driven vehicles and CAVs will interact. Understanding technological aspects (e.g. communication protocols, control algorithms, etc.) is crucial for analysing the impact of CAVs, but the modification induced in human driving behaviours by the presence of CAVs is also of paramount importance. For this reason, the definition of appropriate CAV investigations methods and tools represents a key (and open) issue. One of the most promising approaches for assessing the impact of CAVs is operator in the loop simulators, since having a real driver involved in the simulation represents an advantageous approach. However, the behaviour of the driver in the simulator must be validated and this paper discusses the results of some experiments concerning car-following behaviour. These experiments have included both driving simulators and an instrumented vehicle, and have observed the behaviours of a large sample of drivers, in similar conditions, in different experimental environments. Similarities and differences in driver behaviour will be presented and discussed with respect to the observation of one important quantity of car-following, the maintained spacing

    When Should the Chicken Cross the Road? - Game Theory for Autonomous Vehicle - Human Interactions

    Autonomous vehicle localization, mapping and planning in un-reactive environments are well-understood, but the human factors of complex interactions with other road users are not yet developed. This study presents an initial model for negotiation between an autonomous vehicle and another vehicle at an unsigned intersections or (equivalently) with a pedestrian at an unsigned road-crossing (jaywalking), using discrete sequential game theory. The model is intended as a basic framework for more realistic and data-driven future extensions. The model shows that when only vehicle position is used to signal intent, the optimal behaviors for both agents must include a non-zero probability of allowing a collision to occur. This suggests extensions to reduce this probability in future, such as other forms of signaling and control. Unlike most Game Theory applications in Economics, active vehicle control requires real-time selection from multiple equilibria with no history, and we present and argue for a novel solution concept, meta-strategy convergence, suited to this task

    Measurement of the elastic modulus of homogeneous materials by a bending wave speed method

    Elastic modulus is one of the most important mechanical properties of homogeneous materials. It describes the dynamic behaviour of elastic and viscoelastic materials, strongly affecting both panel modes and coincidence frequencies, so is an important quantity to consider in noise and vibration control. A method to obtain the elastic modulus of materials is proposed herein, based on the measurement of the surface velocity field occurring due to the propagation of bending waves through a panel. A 2D spatial Fourier transform applied to the measured velocity field allowed evaluation of the wavevectors of the free bending waves propagating in the panel. By averaging over wave direction, the overall amplitude distribution versus wavenumber can be found, and from this the dominant wavenumber obtained. From the latter it is straightforward to calculate the flexural wave speed, which can, via classical plate theory, be related to the static elastic modulus value of the material. A preliminary experimental test-rig was based on laser Doppler vibrometry measurements in order to assess the surface velocity of a freely suspended sample, acoustically excited by a broadband signal. The experimental results show a reasonable agreement to the manufacturer’s technical data and to the outcomes of related numerical simulations, although some issues require further research

    Cardiovascular disease risk assessment in patients with familial Mediterranean fever related renal amyloidosis

    Chronic inflammation and proteinuria is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with chronic kidney diseases and rheumatologic disorders. Our aim was to investigate the CVD events (CVDEs) and survival between the patients with FMF-related AA amyloidosis and glomerulonephropathies (GN) to define possible predictors for CVDEs. A prospective follow-up study with FMF-amyloidosis and glomerulonephropathy (GN) was performed and patients were followed for CVDEs. Flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), FGF-23, serum lipid, hsCRP levels, BMI and HOMA were assessed. A Cox regression analysis was performed to evaluate the risk factors for CVDEs. There were 107 patients in the FMF-amyloidosis group and 126 patients with GN group. Forty-seven CVDEs were observed during the 4.2-years follow up; all 28 patients in the FMF-amyloidosis group and 14/19 patients with GN developed CVDEs before the age of 40 (p = 0.002). CVD mortality was 2.8 times higher (95% CI 1.02–7.76) in patients with FMF-amyloidosis. Across both groups, FMD and FGF23 (p < 0.001) levels were independently associated with the risk of CVDEs. Patients with FMF-amyloidosis are at increased risk of early CVDEs with premature mortality age. FGF 23, FMD and hsCRP can stratify the risk of early CVD in patients with FMF-related AA amyloidosis

    Tissue and serum immune response in chronic hepatitis C with mild histological lesions

    The immunopathogenesis of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a matter of great controversy and has been suggested to involve a complex balance between cytokines with pro and anti-inflammatory activity. We investigated the expression of inflammatory cells and cytokines in the liver and serum of 51 chronically HCV infected patients and compared them to data from two sets of normal controls: 51 healthy blood donors and 33 liver biopsies of healthy liver donors. We also assessed the relationship between selected cytokines and cell populations in hepatic compartments and the disease stage. Compared with controls, hepatitis C patients had a greater expression of portal TNF-&#945;, TGF-&#946; and CD4+ and acinar IFN-&#947;, TNF-&#945;, IL-1&#946; and IL-4, as well as a higher serum concentration of IL-2, IL-10 and TGF-&#946;. Significant positive correlations were found between portal CD4+ and TNF-&#945;, portal CD8+ and TGF-&#946;, portal CD45+RO and TNF-&#945;, acinar CD45+RO and IFN-&#947; and acinar CD57+ and TGF-&#946;. In conclusion, we have shown that (i) in this sample of predominantly mild disease, the immune response was associated with a pro-inflammatory response pattern, (ii) CD4+ T-lymphocytes played a major role in orchestrating the immune response and (iii) these events primarily took place in the portal space.FAPES

    A novel pathway producing dimethylsulphide in bacteria is widespread in soil environments

    The volatile compound dimethylsulphide (DMS) is important in climate regulation, the sulphur cycle and signalling to higher organisms. Microbial catabolism of the marine osmolyte dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP) is thought to be the major biological process generating DMS. Here we report the discovery and characterisation of the first gene for DMSP-independent DMS production in any bacterium. This gene, mddA, encodes a methyltransferase that methylates methanethiol (MeSH) and generates DMS. MddA functions in many taxonomically diverse bacteria including sediment-dwelling pseudomonads, nitrogen-fixing bradyrhizobia and cyanobacteria, and mycobacteria, including the pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The mddA gene is present in metagenomes from varied environments, being particularly abundant in soil environments, where it is predicted to occur in up to 76% of bacteria. This novel pathway may significantly contribute to global DMS emissions, especially in terrestrial environments, and could represent a shift from the notion that DMSP is the only significant precursor of DMS

    Adaptation and validation of the Charlson Index for Read/OXMIS coded databases

    BACKGROUND: The Charlson comorbidity index is widely used in ICD-9 administrative data, however, there is no translation for Read/OXMIS coded data despite increasing use of the General Practice Research Database (GPRD). Our main objective was to translate the Charlson index for use with Read/OXMIS coded data such as the GPRD and test its association with mortality. We also aimed to provide a version of the comorbidity index for other researchers using similar datasets. METHODS: Two clinicians translated the Charlson index into Read/OXMIS codes. We tested the association between comorbidity score and increased mortality in 146 441 patients from the GPRD using proportional hazards models. RESULTS: This Read/OXMIS translation of the Charlson index contains 3156 codes. Our validation showed a strong positive association between Charlson score and age. Cox proportional models show a positive increasing association with mortality and Charlson score. The discrimination of the logistic regression model for mortality was good (AUC = 0.853). CONCLUSION: We have translated a commonly used comorbidity index into Read/OXMIS for use in UK primary care databases. The translated index showed a good discrimination in our study population. This is the first study to develop a co-morbidity index for use with the Read/OXMIS coding system and the GPRD. A copy of the co-morbidity index is provided for other researchers using similar database

    Caregiver stress in traumatic brain injury

    Aims Many patients experience physical, behavioural, cognitive and emotional problems following traumatic brain injury (TBI). They may require continuing care for many years, most of which is provided by informal caregivers, such as spouses, parents, or other family members. The caregiving role is associated with a range of adverse effects including anxiety, depression, poor physical health and lowered quality of life. This article explores issues around caregiver stress; highlighting interventions for this group and areas for further research. Methods Literature exploring the impact of caregiving, its influencing and alleviating factors and interventions for caregivers of people with TBI is discussed, with brief critical analysis of key studies. Findings Research suggests that caregiver characteristics, coping strategies, their appraisal of the situation and social networks may be associated with the amount of distress experienced. Many caregivers have unmet needs such as respite care and information provision on TBI. Providing information may help to alleviate strain. Community-based family therapies providing education, support and counselling can help to decrease distress and improve aspects of family functioning, although evidence for these is lacking. Conclusions There is a need for more well-designed, controlled studies evaluating the impact of interventions to alleviate caregiver strain

    Selected Schizosaccharomyces pombe Strains Have Characteristics That Are Beneficial for Winemaking

    At present, wine is generally produced using Saccharomyces yeast followed by Oenococus bacteria to complete malolactic fermentation. This method has some unsolved problems, such as the management of highly acidic musts and the production of potentially toxic products including biogenic amines and ethyl carbamate. Here we explore the potential of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe to solve these problems. We characterise an extensive worldwide collection of S. pombe strains according to classic biochemical parameters of oenological interest. We identify three genetically different S. pombe strains that appear suitable for winemaking. These strains compare favourably to standard Saccharomyces cerevisiae winemaking strains, in that they perform effective malic acid deacidification and significantly reduce levels of biogenic amines and ethyl carbamate precursors without the need for any secondary bacterial malolactic fermentation. These findings indicate that the use of certain S. pombe strains could be advantageous for winemaking in regions where malic acid is problematic, and these strains also show superior performance with respect to food safety
